1. Dark (2017–2020)

Genre: Sci-fi Thriller | IMDb: 8.7/10 | Directors: Baran bo Odar, Jantje Friese
Starring: Louis Hofmann, Lisa Vicari, Andreas Pietschmann

At its core, Dark is about time but not in the way you’d expect. The German series begins as a simple missing-person story in the quiet town of Winden but quickly escalates into a multigenerational tale of interconnected timelines and harrowing paradoxes.

The intricate plot layers will have you drawing your own timeline charts before the final revelations blow your mind.

IMHO: Watching “Dark” is like solving a Rubik’s cube blindfolded. The family tree in this show is, quite literally, a tree that loops back into itself with daughters who give birth to their own mothers.

There are moments where you’ll feel smarter than Einstein when you connect the dots, followed by moments where your jaw is on the floor, realizing you know nothing.

Beyond the sci-fi, it’s a meditation on whether we’re bound by fate or can truly change things if we understand them. It’s complex, mysterious, and undoubtedly one of the smartest series ever created. If you love sci-fi and don’t mind mentally working for the payoff, this is your show.

2. Pantheon (2022)

Genre: Sci-fi Animation | IMDb: 8.4/10 | Director: Micah Gunnell
Starring: Katie Chang, Paul Dano, Aaron Eckhart

A criminally underrated sci-fi animated series, Pantheon explores uploaded consciousness and the human toll of advanced technology.

What begins as a grieving teen connecting with her deceased father’s consciousness evolves into a sprawling conspiracy. The show’s carefully seeded twists climax in revelations that will have you questioning morality, identity, and what it means to live.

IMHO: Sci-fi fans, assemble: “Pantheon” is an ambitious dive into what happens when technology overtakes humanity. A message in emojis helps a girl from her bullies and takes her down the biggest rabbit hole ever.

We are talking companies cloning their CEOs, scalping their employees to laser out their memories from their brains and some Truman show-esque twists.

All while asking the hard questions, “Are we still human without our bodies?” Does a body make you human or your consciousness? What do you think, what is it that makes you, YOU? As a Ken Liu fan, I might be biased, but this show is seriously underrated.

3. Forgotten (2017)

Genre: Thriller | IMDb: 7.4/10 | Director: Jang Hang-Jun
Starring: Kang Ha-Neul, Kim Moo-Yeol

This South Korean thriller is as emotionally gripping as it is mind-twisting. It begins with Jin-seok witnessing his brother’s abduction, only for him to mysteriously return 19 days later with no memory of what happened.

As Jin-Seok tries to uncover the truth, he finds himself plunged into an utterly shocking conspiracy.

IMHO: Sometimes you cross paths and it brings nothing but disaster for all parties. Trauma can be buried, but “Forgotten” shows the devastating lengths some will go to either recover or protect the truth.

It starts off as one thing—a sort of psychological whodunit and then just mutates into something so unexpected, I was shaking my head at how seamlessly the change happened. The pacing is genius, and it’s proof that South Korea owns the mystery/thriller game right now.

4. Brand New Cherry Flavor (2021)

Genre: Psychological Horror | IMDb: 7.1/10 | Director: Nick Antosca
Starring: Rosa Salazar, Catherine Keener, Eric Lange

Lisa’s story in Brand New Cherry Flavor begins as a classic revenge plot and quickly devolves into hallucinatory chaos.

This 1990s-set supernatural thriller makes use of body horror, dark magic, and twisted relationships to tell a tale of ambition turned sour. The ending is one wild fever dream that’s both grotesque and gripping.

IMHO: This show? WILD. Imagine Mulholland Drive meets #MeToo. Lisa starts as this underdog filmmaker trying to make it big, only for her dream to get hijacked by a sleazy producer.

Desperate to reclaim her stolen film, she turns to a sketchy supernatural figure for revenge, and that’s when everything explodes.

Picture magical realism meets outright chaos: guinea pig concoctions, visceral body horror, and enough “WTF” moments to fuel years of therapy. Not for the faint of heart, but definitely worth the ride if you enjoy the surreal and shocking.

5. Mind-Bending Plot Twists in 1899 (2022)

Genre: Mystery/Sci-Fi | IMDb: 7.3/10 | Creators: Jantje Friese, Baran bo Odar
Starring: Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann

From the minds behind Dark, this mystery series unfolds aboard an immigrant ship to America. What seems like a period drama soon spirals into sci-fi territory with a story questioning reality itself.

Layered with symbols and hidden meanings, it’s a riddle wrapped in a mystery that ends with an unforgettable, reality-shifting twist.

IMHO: The creators of Dark really said, “Let’s confuse people again, but on a ship this time! Watching 1899 is like having a front-row ticket to unravel the matrix, except you’re not sure if there even is a matrix. Asking us -Is reality just a construct of the mind?

This voyage takes us into the mechanics of the mind, memory and whether or not we are in fact living in simulation or a dream within a dream.

The first season’s ending was chef’s kiss, but the abrupt cancellation after one season? Absolute heartbreak. If you like this drama, you may want to watch Pyramid Game a Korean drama with an equally surprising twist.

6. Evil (2019–2024)

Genre: Supernatural Drama | IMDb: 7.8/10 | Creators: Michelle King, Robert King
Starring: Katja Herbers, Mike Colter, Aasif Mandvi

What happens when a priest-in-training, a forensic psychologist, and a tech-savvy contractor take on the church’s most terrifying cases?

Enter Evil, a smart supernatural drama that combines creepy tales of possession and demons with sharp philosophical debates about belief, science, and morality. The big twist? The growing sense of apocalyptic dread is chillingly believable.

IMHO: Picture this: a priest, a psychologist, and a skeptic walk into a demonic case—it sounds like a bad joke, but “Evil” takes the concept to fascinating places.

The blend of spine-tingling moments (like George, the snarky sleep paralysis demon) and philosophical dilemmas that make you question everything.

What’s evil? Who’s evil? And why does the demon, George, feel like your worst sleep paralysis nightmare? I binged the entire series in two weeks and honestly, the cancellation was a crime, but those first seasons are worth it.

7. Strangers From Hell (2019)

Genre: Psychological Thriller | IMDb: 7.8/10 | Director: Lee Chang-Hee
Starring: Im Si-Wan, Lee Dong-Wook

Moving to Seoul for work, an aspiring writer rents a room in a budget-friendly goshiwon, only to find himself surrounded by some of the creepiest neighbors imaginable.

As the tension ramps up, secrets about the residents are revealed, delivering psychological shocks right up until its horrifying conclusion.

IMHO: If watching Don’t F**k with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer taught you anything–it is don’t move into a place where cats are being killed. Nevertheless, moving into a cheap place shouldn’t be a death sentence, but here we are.

Watching the protagonist’s mental state unravel amid psychotic neighbors is a slow-burn delight. If you like the unreliable narrative trope, Im Si-Wan does a fantastic job of making you question who the problem is—him or his neighbors.

8. Russian Doll (2019–)

Genre: Dark Comedy/Sci-fi | IMDb: 7.7/10 | Creators: Natasha Lyonne, Leslye Headland
Starring: Natasha Lyonne, Charlie Barnett, Greta Lee

Imagine being stuck in a time loop but instead of pure chaos, the loop becomes a tool for self-reflection. Natasha Lyonne shines as Nadia, a brash and lovable lead, trying to solve the mystery of her continuous death on her birthday.

With sharp humor and layered storytelling, it leaves you pondering human connection and fate. The show’s unique spin on time loops makes it endlessly rewatchable.

IMHO: At first, I thought, “Oh, just another time-loop show.” Nope! “Russian Doll” spirals into this profound, existential meditation that hit harder than expected. I mean would you like to live one day continuously forever?

That sounds like hell and strangely reminiscent of Preacher but the hilarious chaos evolves into something surprisingly deep. It examines trauma, unresolved guilt, and even intergenerational pain. Season 2 takes it to another level. An absolute must-watch.
